Dr Alistair Cook discusses the achievements of ASEAN, outlining recent developments in security and human rights instruments, and suggests ways in which other regional organizations may learn from ASEAN. He contends that ASEAN has been successful in balancing regional interests against bowing to great powers, preventing southeast Asia from becoming a political playground.
